How Much Does a Bio Bay Tour Cost in Puerto Rico?

A guided night on one of Puerto Rico's three bio bays costs between $52 and $112 per person when you meet the guide at the water, and tours that collect you in San Juan start at $110. Below: what the extra money pays for, what costs extra, and the tours we'd compare first.

Updated October 2026

A group in clear kayaks at dusk before a bio bay tour in Puerto Rico

How you get to the bay moves the price more than which bay you choose. At Laguna Grande in Fajardo, Mosquito Bay on Vieques and La Parguera in Lajas, a guided paddle or boat ride costs $52 to $112 per person when you make your own way to the launch. Tours that pick you up in San Juan start at $110 for a Fajardo kayak and reach $250 for a La Parguera evening with dinner and a swim.

What the prices mean

  • A strong all-round option: the Fajardo Bioluminescent Lagoon Kayak tour, from $85 per person for three hours on Laguna Grande, about an hour’s drive east of San Juan.
  • San Juan pickup adds about $38 to a Fajardo kayak tour. Kayaking Puerto Rico’s tour costs $72 if you drive to Las Croabas, and the cheapest Laguna Grande kayak with pickup is $110.
  • Vieques has the lowest tour prices, but reaching the island costs extra. Clear-kayak tours on Mosquito Bay start at $55, the ferry from Ceiba is $2 each way for now, and an evening tour usually means a night on the island.
  • La Parguera is the only bay where you can swim. The most-reviewed swim cruise there costs $65.
  • Prices are per person, so four adults pay four fares: $340 for the Fajardo kayak tour above at the starting price. The one private trip is priced per group, at $1,499.
  • Tips are extra on most tours. A couple of listings include the $3 fee that Puerto Rico’s natural resources department (DRNA) charges at the reserves.

Our pick, and the alternatives by trip

The three-hour Laguna Grande tour in the calendar above is where we’d start if you are staying in San Juan and can drive to Fajardo. It costs $13 more than Kayaking Puerto Rico’s two-hour tour from the same village and $20 more than Pure Adventure’s. For that you get an extra hour and the highest rating of the three: 4.6/5 from more than 270 reviews, against 4.3 and 4.1. Snacks, water, insect repellent and a double kayak are included. You still get yourself to the operator’s kiosk in Las Croabas at the end of Road 987, because transport is not part of the price. Our full review of this tour covers the paddle itself.

If you have no car in San Juan

PR Access Tours' San Juan: Bioluminescent Laguna Grande Bay Night Kayaking is $125 for a five-hour evening, with round-trip transport from a set hotel pickup point in San Juan, one tour photo, water and snacks. It is rated 4.4/5 from 95 reviews. Bespoke’s From San Juan: Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Adventure at Night costs $15 less, at $110, and picks up from hotels in selected San Juan areas. It has far more reviews (more than 600) and a lower rating, 4.1/5. Choose PR Access for the rating, or Bespoke’s tour if you’d like to be collected nearer your hotel and save the $15.

For the brightest bay

Several Vieques listings call Mosquito Bay the brightest bio bay in the world. Salty Spirit’s Vieques: Bioluminescent Bay Full Clear Kayaking gives you two hours in fully clear two-person kayaks for $112, in a small group, with a ride from the meeting spot to the bay. It is rated 4.7/5 from more than 100 reviews. On a tighter budget, Tropical Reef’s Vieques Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Night Tour is $55 for one hour in a transparent kayak (4.4/5 from 49 reviews), and its listing says it takes the 7 p.m. group back to the ferry port afterwards.

If you want to swim in the glow

Mareaito Charters' La Parguera: Sunset and Biobay or Late Night Biobay Cruise runs two hours for $65, with a swim stop in the bay, floaties and a cooler of water. At 4.8/5 from more than 550 reviews, it is the most-reviewed tour on that bay. La Parguera is about two hours from San Juan, and the listing warns there is no bathroom on board. Our guide to swimming in the bio bays explains why the other two bays are paddle-only.

A full day from San Juan

Island Journeys' San Juan: El Yunque and Bio Bay Full-Day Tour takes twelve hours for $183: a rainforest hike and natural rock slide in El Yunque, then the Laguna Grande kayak after dark. Pickup, the rainforest entry fee, snacks and trip photos are included and dinner is not. It is rated 4.7/5 from more than 240 reviews. Bespoke’s El Yunque Rainforest & Bio Bay Kayak Combo is $18 less, at $165, with bottled water in place of snacks (4.6/5 from 164 reviews).

An evening with dinner and rum

Borikua Tours' From San Juan: Bio Bay Magic & Rum Tasting Tour costs $250 for nine hours: hotel pickup, a rum mixology session, dinner, time on a sandbar and a swim in La Parguera’s bay, rated 4.8/5 from more than 200 reviews. Bespoke’s From San Juan: La Parguera Glowing Bio Bay Boat Tour covers the same drive and the same bay for $199, with appetizers, water and local beer in place of dinner and the rum session.

Where do the tours start?

Most of them start at the water. You drive or take a taxi to the launch, meet the guide at dusk and are back on land two or three hours later. Each bay has its own set of operators, so the bay you can reach decides your price range.

BayWhere you meetGetting there from San JuanTours at the bayWith San Juan pickup

Without a car, the pickup tours are the simplest way in. For Vieques there is also a packaged option from the main island: Snorkeling Puerto Rico’s Vieques Bio Bay Kayak Experience from Mainland Puerto Rico is $295 for seven hours, with the boat from Fajardo, ground transport on Vieques and the kayak included. It has only one review so far. The cheaper way over is the public ferry, at $2 each way; our guide on how to get to Vieques compares it with the flights, and our guide to bio bay tours from San Juan covers the pickup tours in more detail.

How the price changes your night

Mostly it buys transport and extra hours. The bay doesn’t glow any brighter for the people who paid more.

Around $52 to $85: an hour or two on the water. You get yourself to the launch, then paddle, pedal or ride with a guide. At Laguna Grande that includes the mangrove channel, 25 to 30 minutes each way, before you reach the lagoon. Kayaking Puerto Rico’s $72 tour is a typical example.

Around $105 to $125: a boat on Vieques, fully clear kayaks in a small group, or a ride from San Juan. With pickup, the evening runs about five hours from hotel to hotel. PR Access Tours’ $125 tour is the one we’d choose at this price.

Around $165 to $295: a full day built around the bay. El Yunque in the afternoon, dinner and rum before a La Parguera swim, or the boat crossing to Vieques. Island Journeys’ $183 day is our pick here, with the rainforest fee and snacks included.

$1,499 per group: a private day to La Parguera with snorkeling, sunset and a swim, with no reviews so far.

What doesn’t change is the glow. It depends on the moon, the weather and the time of year, and every group on the bay that night sees the same water. Our guide to the best time to see the bioluminescent bays covers the dark-moon dates. Every tour in this guide lists free cancellation.

What costs extra

  • Getting to the launch. Most tours meet at the water in Las Croabas, Esperanza or La Parguera and don’t include transport.
  • The ferry to Vieques. The Ceiba–Vieques ferry is $2 each way per adult. A higher $11.25 one-way fare for non-residents has been postponed until December 31, 2026, so check before you travel. With the round-trip ferry, Tropical Reef’s $55 tour comes to $59 per person.
  • A night on Vieques. An evening tour on Mosquito Bay often finishes after the last ferry, so plan on staying over; the Mosquito Bay guide covers where.
  • The reserve fee. The DRNA charges $3 per person. Pure Adventure’s and the Chiliboats water bike’s listings include it.
  • Tips. Most listings leave them out, and Snorkeling Puerto Rico’s listing says a 10% cash tip is customary.
  • Dinner on the long days. Island Journeys and both Bespoke Laguna Grande tours leave out meals; Borikua’s rum tour includes it.
  • Towels and extra photos. Bring a towel for a La Parguera swim. PR Access Tours includes one photo and charges for more.

Prices for two and for four

These multiply the starting price, so they are for adults; the booking calendar shows child fares where an operator offers them.

TourOne personTwo peopleFour people
Tropical Reef, Vieques, with the round-trip ferry$59$118$236
Joy Tours, La Parguera$60$120$240
Fajardo Bioluminescent Lagoon Kayak tour$85$170$340
PR Access Tours, with San Juan pickup$125$250$500
Island Journeys, El Yunque and bio bay$183$366$732

The private La Parguera day works the other way: it costs $1,499 for the group, which is about $750 each for two people and about $375 each for four.

Should you pay more?

Pay more for pickup if you are in San Juan without a car, or for a fully clear kayak if you have made the trip to Vieques. If you can drive to Fajardo or you are already staying near La Parguera, the tours that meet at the water cost less: $72 for Kayaking Puerto Rico’s tour against $110 for the cheapest pickup, on the same lagoon.
