How to Get to Vieques (Ferry vs Flight), and Can You Do Mosquito Bay as a Day Trip?

Ferry or flight to Vieques from San Juan? 2026 fares, Ceiba ferry tips, island flights, and whether Mosquito Bay works as a day trip.

Updated October 2026

Glowing water at night in Mosquito Bay, the reason most visitors plan the trip to Vieques

Vieques sits just off Puerto Rico’s east coast, close enough to see from the mainland on a clear day, but getting there takes more planning than the map suggests. The ferry to Vieques no longer leaves from Fajardo, and none runs from San Juan. Tickets are cheap but go fast, rental cars can’t ride along, and the bio bay you came for only lights up after dark, usually after the last boat has left. This guide covers every route from San Juan to Vieques: what it costs, how long it takes, and the one schedule detail that tells you whether you need a hotel.

The short answer

  • Cheapest: the public ferry from Ceiba (not Fajardo, not San Juan). The adult fare is $2 each way, the crossing takes about 1 hour, and you need to arrive 1 hour early. A non-resident increase to $11.25 has been postponed to December 31, 2026.
  • Best value for reliability: fly Ceiba to Vieques. The flight takes about 10 minutes, and Google Flights has shown one-way fares from $55–$56 on Vieques Air Link.
  • Most convenient from the airport: fly SJU to Vieques on Cape Air. The flight takes about 25 minutes, and Cape Air’s fare calendar for fall 2026 showed one-way fares from $79–$199.
  • Mosquito Bay as a day trip? Possible, but tight. Book the first tour of the night and pair it with the 9:30 PM ferry, or book a packaged day trip from San Juan. A night on Vieques is the better plan.
  • On the island: rent a Jeep or car (book it before your ferry or flight), or use públicos (shared vans, about $5 per person between the ferry and Esperanza).

Where does the ferry to Vieques leave from?

The ferry to Vieques leaves only from the Ceiba Ferry Terminal (Marina Dr., Roosevelt Roads, Ceiba, PR 00735) and arrives at Isabel II (Isabel Segunda) on Vieques. There is no ferry from San Juan, and the Fajardo terminal no longer serves Vieques. Sailings moved to Ceiba in October 2018.

Plenty of people still search for “ferry to Vieques from Fajardo” or “ferry from Fajardo to Vieques price.” The Fajardo route is gone. If a site sends you to Fajardo for the public ferry (lancha a Vieques), it’s out of date. Fajardo now matters to Vieques visitors mainly for private catamaran day tours from marinas like Puerto del Rey, covered below.

Who runs the Vieques ferry?

The service is branded Puerto Rico Ferry, “anchored by Hornblower” (operated by HMS Ferries), under contract to Puerto Rico’s Autoridad de Transporte Integrado (ATI). The operator’s own schedule PDFs say the government sets the timetable: “All Puerto Rico Ferry schedules are created by and at the full direction of the Government of Puerto Rico.”

How long is the ferry ride to Vieques?

Plan for about one hour on the water. Puerto Rico Ferry describes Vieques as “a 1-hour ferry ride away.” Some guides quote shorter times: Discover Puerto Rico says about 30 minutes, and Puerto Rico Day Trips says 40–45 minutes on the fast passenger boats and closer to an hour on cargo-passenger ferries. TripAdvisor reviewers in 2026 report around 45 minutes. Budget the full hour plus the required hour of check-in.

What’s the Vieques ferry schedule?

There’s no fixed, year-round timetable. Puerto Rico Ferry publishes dated PDF itineraries covering a few months at a time, and the current one runs August 1 to November 30, 2026. We don’t print current departure times here, because they change and a stale schedule is worse than none. Check the official route page the day before and the morning of your trip.

Past schedules show a consistent pattern:

  • Weekdays (Ceiba to Vieques): early sailings around 4:30–5:00 AM, then mid-morning, early afternoon, late afternoon and an evening boat around 8:00 PM. The September 2025 weekday schedule had 4:30 AM, 4:45 AM, 8:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:45 PM, 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM.
  • Weekdays (Vieques to Ceiba): the last sailing has usually been 9:30 PM. That’s the boat that makes same-day bio bay trips possible.
  • Weekends: a slightly different schedule, still with early-morning and evening boats.
  • Special dates: holidays and the Vieques fiestas patronales (mid-July) get special schedules, sometimes with later last departures. In July 2025 the last boat from Vieques ran as late as 1:00 AM during the patron saint festival.

Don’t plan around any blog’s departure times, including ours. Download the official PDF and check the City Experiences app on the day for service alerts.

How much is the ferry to Vieques in 2026?

Right now, the adult fare is $2.00 each way (ages 13–59). Children 4–12 and adults 60–74 pay $1.00, and babies 0–3 and seniors 75+ ride free. This is Puerto Rico Ferry’s official rate table, last modified May 18, 2026.

The $11.25 fare: what’s happening (checked October 2026)

  • ATI regulations set a non-resident fare of $11.25 per leg ($22.50 round trip) for Vieques and Culebra. Registered residents and approved local merchants keep the subsidized fare.
  • The increase has been postponed repeatedly: from January 1, 2026, to February 28, to April 1, to May 5. Then on May 4–5, 2026, ATI director Josué Menéndez Agosto announced a further delay until December 31, 2026, while the regulation is amended. Metro Puerto Rico, El Vocero, WIPR, NotiCel and Presencia PR all reported this.
  • The mayors, José “Junito” Corcino of Vieques and Edilberto Romero Llovet of Culebra (per Presencia PR), argued the fare study was outdated. El Vocero reported that the study “se basó en un concepto que ya no existe: el antiguo terminal de lanchas en Fajardo” (it was based on a concept that no longer exists: the old Fajardo ferry terminal), and that fares had gone 38 years without review. Residents protested, and an April 1, 2026 protest blocked the Vieques terminal and cancelled sailings.

Some sites still have it wrong. Some travel sites, and at least one Vieques guesthouse page written in April 2026, still say the $11.25 fare “took effect May 5, 2026.” That rests on reports published before the last-minute postponement. NotiCel reported on May 8, 2026 that ATI director Josué Menéndez Agosto confirmed the current $2 fare to Vieques “continuará en vigor… hasta el 31 de diciembre,” with ATI spending “los próximos ocho meses” revising the rule and the non-resident increase expected in January 2027. Your checkout total is the final word. If you’re traveling on or after December 31, 2026, budget $22.50 per adult round trip in case the new fare kicks in.

(El Vocero’s May 2026 article, Metro PR, WIPR and NotiCel cite “Reglamento Núm. 9682,” while earlier El Vocero and Primera Hora coverage used “6892.” It’s the same fare rule; the number appears to be a transcription inconsistency.)

Culebra note: non-residents going to Culebra pay an extra $2 environmental fee per person, in effect since March 2025 according to Discover Puerto Rico. Vieques has no equivalent fee.

How do I buy Vieques ferry tickets?

Buy online at puertoricoferry.com or in the City Experiences app as soon as the schedule for your travel month is published. The terminal window is your backup, not your plan.

  • Online and app: the City Experiences app lets you “buy and store tickets,” see schedules and service alerts, and track the vessel live.
  • Sales window: tickets usually go on sale only for the published schedule. Casa de Kathy (April 2026) noted the schedule appears “about two weeks before the start of each month.”
  • Sold out online isn’t always sold out: the operator holds back inventory for the terminal window, but busy sailings can sell out there too. One local site claims only about 20% of capacity is sold online; we couldn’t confirm that figure.
  • Resident priority: islanders depend on these boats for work and medical care, and resident registration is built into the system. On holiday weekends, expect locals to fill boats first.
  • Rules (official): all sales are final, with no refunds. You can transfer a ticket two times, and only up to 1 hour before departure.

When do I need to arrive at the Ceiba terminal?

One hour before departure. Check-in closes 10 minutes before the boat leaves. That’s the operator’s rule. Bring photo ID; residents must show ID that matches the name on the ticket.

What can I bring on the ferry? (Luggage, pets, bikes)

  • Free: one small carry-on per passenger.
  • Extra items need their own one-way tickets: beach chairs $1, beach umbrellas $1, beach coolers $2, bicycles $2, camping cabins $2, bodyboards $3, surfboards $6, caged animals $2, hand trucks $5 (official rates page). Some guides say extra suitcases are ticketed at about $1 each, so add each extra bag at checkout instead of arguing at the gate.
  • Pets: service and guide animals travel free. Any other pet “must travel in its carrier.”

Can I take a rental car on the ferry to Vieques?

No. Puerto Rico Ferry won’t sell vehicle tickets for rental cars. Vehicle tickets are sold in person at the window to owners who show a license and registration, and in practice cargo-ferry car space goes to Vieques and Culebra residents. Rent your car on Vieques.

Is the Vieques ferry reliable?

Mostly, but not enough to stake a non-refundable plan on one sailing. Weather, mechanical problems and protests all cause cancellations. In 2026 alone:

  • February 2026: weather cancellations stranded Vieques residents, some of whom slept on the terminal floor (WAPA, Los Datos).
  • April 1, 2026: a protest against the fare increase blocked the Vieques terminal with trucks and cancelled trips in both directions (Primera Hora). One TripAdvisor reviewer stuck that day paid $120 for two people to fly back to Ceiba.

Always know your plan B. The fallback is a Ceiba–Vieques flight of about 10 minutes. Leave a buffer day before any flight home, cruise or wedding.

What’s the ride like? (And seasickness tips)

The passenger ferries are enclosed and air-conditioned. One 2026 reviewer noted “you cannot go outside and the AC makes it cold,” so bring a layer. The crossing passes through the open Vieques Passage and can be choppy, especially on windy winter days.

  • Sit low and toward the middle of the boat; motion is worst up front.
  • Take motion-sickness medication 30 to 60 minutes before boarding.
  • Eat something light and dry, and skip the greasy terminal breakfast.
  • Look at the horizon when you can; screens make it worse.

What about the cargo ferry?

Cargo and cargo-passenger ferries also run between Ceiba and Vieques, mainly for residents moving vehicles and freight. Visitors can sometimes ride as passengers, but the crossing is slower (about 1 hour to Vieques).

How do I get from San Juan to the Ceiba ferry terminal?

Driving takes about 75–90 minutes from SJU airport, longer at rush hour. An Uber runs roughly $70–$100, and private drivers charge about $50–$100.

Driving from San Juan to Ceiba

  • Route: take PR-26 east to PR-66 (toll road), follow PR-66 to its end, then continue on PR-3 east toward Fajardo. PR-3 becomes PR-53; take Exit 2 (km 1.4) before the first toll booth and follow signs to Roosevelt Roads (route via Puerto Rico Day Trips).
  • Time: Puerto Rico Day Trips estimates 75–90 minutes from SJU; Discover Puerto Rico says about 1.5 hours. Weekday commute traffic can add 30–45 minutes, according to Blue Horizon Boutique Resort.
  • Tolls: PR-66 requires an AutoExpreso transponder. Most rental cars include one and bill you afterward, so check your rental agreement.

Parking at the Ceiba ferry terminal

  • There’s a large paid lot near the terminal, with a shuttle van to the gate.
  • Price reports range from $8 to $15 per day. TripAdvisor posters have reported $8, a 2025 blog reported $12, and Puerto Rico Day Trips and Ceiba Ferry Transfers both say $15 per 24 hours. The operator publishes no official rate, so budget $15 a day.
  • Don’t park on the roadside; Puerto Rico Day Trips warns that tickets are issued.

Renting a car on the main island just to park it at Ceiba means paying for a car you aren’t using. If your Vieques stay is two nights or more, consider a one-way rental drop-off, or a driver.

Uber, taxis and shuttles to Ceiba

  • Uber from San Juan: about $70–$100 (Experience Vieques, September 2026). Getting there is easy; getting back is the problem. Ceiba has few idle drivers, so pre-book a named driver for your return.
  • Private drivers and transfers: Casa de Kathy cites about $100 from SJU airport to the Ceiba dock; Villa Dos Palmas cites $50–$70 per carload for a taxi to Ceiba.
  • Ferry-transfer companies sell shuttle-plus-ticket packages from San Juan hotels. Compare them against a private driver if you’re a group.

Flights to Vieques: airlines, airports and fares

Three San Juan-area airports have flights to Vieques (VQS): San Juan international (SJU), San Juan Isla Grande (SIG) and Ceiba (RVR/NRR). The cheapest and shortest is Ceiba; the most convenient for arriving travelers is SJU. Vieques’s airport is Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport (VQS), a few miles west of Isabel II.

Discover Puerto Rico puts San Juan–Vieques fares “starting at $109” one way, which is consistent with the ranges above.

How often are flights from Ceiba to Vieques?

Very often. Google Flights has listed roughly 112–115 Vieques Air Link direct flights per week between Ceiba and Vieques, many a day. That frequency is why the Ceiba flight is the best backup when a ferry is cancelled.

Baggage and weight limits on small planes

  • Vieques Air Link: Backpacking Diplomacy’s 2026 review puts the free allowance at 25 lb total per person, carry-on and personal items included, with overage at $2.00 per pound and “no cap on the number of pieces as long as the total stays under 50 lbs”; Runway Girl Network and Experience Vieques also cite 25 lb. Older listings say 30 lb with about $1 per pound over. We couldn’t check VAL’s own baggage page, so assume 25 lb and confirm at booking.
  • Seat weight: VAL’s official ticket policy caps weight per seat at 370 lb on the Islander (non-refundable fare) or 440 lb (refundable fare). Passengers and bags are weighed.
  • Check-in: VAL says check in at least 45 minutes before departure; the gate closes 15 minutes before.
  • Change and cancel fees (VAL, non-refundable fares): $20 per direction per passenger to change, plus any fare difference. Cancelling costs 20% of the fare 48+ hours out and 50% within 48 hours; no-shows forfeit 100%.
  • Pets (VAL): $30 each way. Pet plus kennel can weigh at most 30 lb on the Islander and 15 lb on the Cherokee.

Pros and cons of flying

Pros: fast, frequent, less weather-fragile than the ferry for short crossings, and the views over the cays and El Yunque are gorgeous.

Cons: fares are 25 to 100 times the ferry fare, weight limits are strict, the planes are tiny (8–9 seats) and make some people nervous, and they fly under VFR (visual flight rules), so bad weather and darkness limit schedules.

Are there night flights back from Vieques?

Scheduled flights are daytime only; plan on no commercial departures after dark. VAL operates under VFR, and island flights generally end around dusk. A 10 PM flight after the bio bay means a private charter, if you can find a pilot willing to fly it. In practice, the 9:30 PM ferry is the only scheduled late-evening way off the island.

Door-to-door times are our estimates, built from the source figures above.

Can you do Vieques as a day trip from San Juan?

Yes. A daytime beach trip to Vieques works well by ferry or Ceiba flight, but it’s a long day: plan on 3 to 4 hours of round-trip transit from San Juan. Mosquito Bay at night is the hard part (see the next section).

Option 1: a self-guided Vieques day trip by ferry

  1. Book an early-morning Ceiba–Vieques sailing and a mid- or late-afternoon return (check the current PDF).
  2. Leave San Juan about 2.5 hours before departure: roughly 75–90 minutes of driving, plus parking, plus the required 1-hour check-in.
  3. On arrival in Isabel II, take a público to Sun Bay or Esperanza (about $5 per person), or pick up a pre-booked rental.
  4. Beach-hop: Sun Bay, the Esperanza Malecón, and the wildlife refuge beaches if you have a car.
  5. Be at the Isabel II terminal one hour before your return sailing.

Option 2: a fly-and-drive day trip from Ceiba

Drive to Ceiba, fly to Vieques (about 10 minutes), rent a Jeep for the day, and fly back before dusk. It costs more but saves hours of queuing. Vieques.com specifically recommends Ceiba flights for travelers with a rental car who “only wish to go to Vieques for a day trip.”

Option 3: catamaran day tours to Vieques from Fajardo

If “boat to Vieques” means a fun day on the water, a catamaran is the answer.

  • Vieques beach and snorkel catamarans from Fajardo run about 6 hours, departing Marina Puerto del Rey, with a sail of roughly 45 minutes and beach time at spots like Sun Bay or Blue Beach. Listings on booking platforms show prices from $145–$180 per adult, typically including lunch, drinks and snorkel gear.
  • Private charters from Fajardo marinas run from about $950 (half day) to $2,000–$2,500+ per group for a full-day private catamaran.

These are daytime beach tours. They don’t give you time to explore Isabel II, and they don’t include Mosquito Bay. If you only want a catamaran day and Vieques itself isn’t the point, the full-day trips to Icacos are closer and among the best-reviewed on the east coast; the Icacos Island Full-Day Catamaran Trip has a 4.8/5 rating from more than 1,000 reviews.

Can I see Mosquito Bay on a day trip from San Juan?

Yes, but only with tight timing: take the first bio bay tour of the night and the last ferry back, usually 9:30 PM. Otherwise, book a packaged day trip. For most travelers, a night on Vieques is the better call.

Why the timing is tight

Bio bay tours start after dark, and Vieques operators set their schedules around sunset:

  • Mosquito Bio Bay Tours has stated that “Monday through Sunday, only the 7:00 PM tour allows enough time to return on the 9:30 PM ferry.” Another notice on its site lists a 6:30 PM first tour as “ideal for same-day ferry return,” as seasonal start times shift.
  • Isla Nena Bio Bay Tours reviewers report taking the 7 PM tour to catch the ferry, with a taxi from the meeting point to the terminal at about $10 per person.
  • Dindin’s Biobay Tours, whose clear-bottom kayak tour meets at the Green Store in Esperanza, says you can return the same night “if you choose the first tour and reserve taxi transportation from the bio bay to the ferry terminal.” Otherwise, you must stay overnight.
  • Aqua Sunset Tours (Esperanza) is blunt: “you will need to stay the night in Vieques, since there will not be enough time to reach the ferry last trip.” Later tours don’t work for day-trippers.
  • On GetYourGuide, the Vieques Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Night Tour with Guide ($55, 4.4/5 from more than 45 reviews) guarantees transport back to the ferry terminal at no extra cost, but only on the first tour of the night.

Add it up. A tour of about 1.5 to 2 hours (including the shuttle from Esperanza), plus a 5- to 6-mile drive back to Isabel II, plus a 1-hour check-in rule, means the timing only works for the first departure. Any delay (a slow group, a late shuttle, a cancelled boat) and you’re stuck on Vieques without a room.

The packaged option: a San Juan to Vieques bio bay day trip

The best-known product is the Vieques Bio Bay Tour and Beach Day Trip from San Juan by Ferry, sold on Viator and TripAdvisor from about $230 per person. It includes:

  • Round-trip transport from San Juan to Ceiba, and ferry tickets
  • Land transfers on Vieques, a beach stop at Sun Bay or Esperanza, and time at the Malecón
  • A clear-bottom kayak tour of Mosquito Bay
  • The 9:30 PM ferry back, arriving in Ceiba around 10:35 PM and San Juan around 11:45 PM

Departure times have varied by listing. One version had pickups around 12:10 PM for a 3:00 PM ferry; a newer one has about 10:50 AM weekday departures for a 1:00 PM ferry. Gratuity isn’t included. Reviewers praise the logistics; one wrote that it “ensures that you do not miss the last ferry.”

Exceptions that let you skip the overnight

  • Private boat from Fajardo: some Fajardo charters run custom evening trips. Expect four figures per group, and confirm night-navigation permission and safety equipment; Mosquito Bay’s protected waters have strict rules for boats. On GetYourGuide, the Vieques Bio Bay Kayak Experience from Mainland Puerto Rico is a 7-hour boat trip from Fajardo with the bio bay included ($295); it has only one review so far, so treat it as untested.
  • Charter flight: possible in theory, but island flying is VFR and largely daytime. Don’t count on a flight after your tour.
  • Special-event ferries: on festival dates the last boat can run much later (1:00 AM during the July 2025 patron saint festival). It’s rare, and only useful if your dates line up.

Our verdict

If you only have one day and your heart is set on Mosquito Bay, book the packaged tour, so someone else carries the risk of the last ferry. If you have any flexibility, stay one night. You get a relaxed dinner in Esperanza, a later and darker tour slot, and no 11:45 PM van ride. If Vieques doesn’t fit at all, Laguna Grande in Fajardo is an easy evening from San Juan; it’s dimmer, but there’s no ferry involved.

The moon matters. Bio bays look brightest on dark, moonless nights, and according to Abe’s Snorkeling (echoed by JAK Water Sports), all Vieques bio bay tour companies close the night before, the night of and the night after the full moon every month under DRNA regulation. Check our best time to visit the bio bays, with its closure calendar, before you lock in dates.

Getting around Vieques

Rent a Jeep or car if you want to explore beaches and the wildlife refuge. If you’re staying in Esperanza and mostly doing the bio bay plus Sun Bay, públicos and taxis are enough. Discover Puerto Rico recommends lining up ground transport in advance, and notes that rental companies aren’t located at the ferry terminals.

Rental cars and Jeeps

  • Price examples: Coqui Car & Island Jeep Rental lists 2-door Wranglers from about $55 per day, 4-doors from about $70, and newer 4-doors from about $95 (as reported by TheTraveler.org, 2026). Momondo users have seen Wranglers average about $101 per day.
  • Book early: the island’s fleet is small, and holiday weeks sell out. Experience Vieques advises booking your car before your crossing.
  • Know the hours: Vieques Car Rental, for example, is open 9:00 AM to 6:30 PM. Arrive later and you pick up the next morning, which won’t reduce your rental charge. Rental days run 1 PM to noon. Paying by debit card means a $500 deposit and a $15 per day loss-damage waiver unless you show proof of coverage.

Golf carts, UTVs and scooters

  • Golf carts are fun but not cheap. Posted rates run around $90 per day (standard) to $110–$120 (premium or deluxe), which can cost more than a base Jeep. Rueditas On The Go advertises carts “starting at $90/day” with insurance and taxes included.
  • Typical carts top out around 18 mph. That’s fine around Esperanza, but slow and exposed on the hilly cross-island road to Isabel II, and miserable in a downpour.
  • Some operators require security deposits ($100 for carts and $250 for vehicles at UTV Rental PR) and have age or height rules for kids.

Públicos and taxis

  • Públicos (shared vans) meet ferries and flights and run mainly between Isabel II and Esperanza. Fares are about $5 per person, or about $20 for two if you charter the van alone (Casa de Kathy). Pay cash.
  • TripAdvisor posters report $15–$20 for taxis from the airport to Esperanza.
  • After about 6–7 PM, rides thin out. Casa de Kathy advises avoiding boats that land after 6 PM and pre-booking your taxi before you leave Ceiba.
  • There’s no Uber on the island in practice. Save local drivers’ numbers.

Distances, roads and driving at night

  • Isabel II (ferry) to Esperanza: about 5–6 miles across the island, roughly 15–20 minutes.
  • Roads are narrow, hilly and sometimes potholed, with few streetlights. Inside the wildlife refuge, some beach roads are rough, which is why Jeeps are popular.
  • Wild horses roam freely, including on roads at night. Drive slowly after dark, especially on the way back from a bio bay tour.
  • Fill up when you see a gas station. Options are limited, and hours may be short on Sundays and holidays.
  • Most bio bay tours include a shuttle from the Esperanza meeting point to the bay, so you won’t drive the bumpy access road yourself.

Where should I stay for Mosquito Bay: Esperanza or Isabel II?

Stay in Esperanza if Mosquito Bay is the priority. Most tour meeting points are there: Calle Flamboyán, the Green Store, and Highway 997 near the Sun Bay entrance. The Vieques Bioluminescent Bay Full Clear Kayaking tour (4.7/5 from more than 100 reviews), for example, meets across from El Quenepo restaurant in Esperanza. You can walk to your tour, eat on the Malecón, and skip night driving entirely.

Choose Isabel II if you’re arriving late or leaving on the first ferry, want the town’s local feel, or are combining Vieques with an early flight. Just budget for a car or a pre-booked taxi for the evening tour.

For tour picks, see our Mosquito Bay tours page and the Vieques vs Fajardo comparison.

Sample itineraries

1 night / 2 days: Vieques with Mosquito Bay

Day 1

  • Morning: leave San Juan; fly from Ceiba or take a late-morning ferry.
  • Midday: público or rental to Esperanza; check in; lunch on the Malecón.
  • Afternoon: Sun Bay beach, a walk from Esperanza, or a mangrove paddle.
  • Evening: early dinner, then a later bio bay tour (8–9 PM slots tend to be darker and less rushed).

Day 2

  • Morning: beach-hop in the wildlife refuge if you have a Jeep.
  • Afternoon: return to Isabel II, arriving one hour before your ferry, or fly. Be back in San Juan by evening.

2–3 nights: the version we’d book

  • Night 1: arrive, settle into Esperanza, sunset on the Malecón.
  • Day 2: refuge beaches, snorkeling, and the bio bay that night (book the darkest night of your stay).
  • Day 3: Playa Negra (the black sand beach), Isabel II’s fort and town, and an optional second bio bay tour in a different style: a clear kayak one night, a boat such as the Vieques Bioluminescent Bay Boat Tour the next.
  • Day 4 (if 3 nights): slow morning, then a midday ferry or flight, which leaves a buffer if the ferry cancels.

How much does an overnight Mosquito Bay trip cost?

Excluding lodging, a budget couple can do it for under $350; a comfort-first couple flying with a Jeep should budget about $600–$900. These are illustrative estimates.

Compare: the packaged San Juan day trip costs about $460 for two before tips. That’s competitive with a cheap overnight, but you lose the relaxed evening and the later, darker tour slots.

Can I combine Vieques and Culebra?

Yes, but usually not directly by public ferry. Plan to route through Ceiba or charter a short flight. Discover Puerto Rico says there’s “no direct public ferry service” between the islands; trips typically need a charter flight or a private boat. One local guide claims an occasional Vieques–Culebra sailing on the last Sunday of the month, and past official schedules have included rare holiday inter-island runs. Treat those as exceptions to check, not a plan. Vieques Air Link connects both islands, and a TripAdvisor poster reported an Aero Taxi charter costing about $180 for up to three passengers each way.

The Ceiba–Culebra ferry takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, according to the operator.

Our best tips for getting to Vieques

  1. Book in this order: rental car, then ferry or flight, then bio bay tour, then lodging. The car fleet is the scarcest resource.
  2. Buy ferry tickets the day the month’s schedule drops, especially for weekends, holidays and Easter week.
  3. Always have a plan B. Save the Vieques Air Link number; the Ceiba flight is your ferry lifeline.
  4. Leave a buffer day before international flights, cruises and anything non-refundable.
  5. Carry cash for públicos, taxis, tips and small vendors.
  6. Hurricane season runs June to November. Discover Puerto Rico recommends December to April for the most settled weather. In storm season, buy flexible fares where you can.
  7. Respect resident priority. For islanders, these boats are a lifeline to work, school and hospitals. Holiday weekends are crowded with Puerto Rican families, so book early and be patient.
  8. Watch the moon for the bio bay, and check operator blackout dates around the full moon.
  9. Check the official schedule twice: the day before and the morning of travel.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Vieques from San Juan?

Drive or ride about 75–90 minutes to the Ceiba terminal and take the ferry (about 1 hour). You can also fly from Ceiba (about 10 minutes), San Juan Isla Grande (about 20 minutes) or SJU (about 25 minutes). No ferry leaves from San Juan.

How long is the ferry to Vieques?

Puerto Rico Ferry says about 1 hour from Ceiba to Isabel II; some trips run closer to 45 minutes. Add the required 1-hour arrival before departure. Check-in closes 10 minutes before sailing.

How much is the ferry to Vieques?

$2 each way for adults (13–59), $1 for kids 4–12 and seniors 60–74, and free under 4 or over 75. A non-resident fare of $11.25 is postponed until December 31, 2026. Confirm at checkout.

Can I take a rental car on the ferry?

No. Puerto Rico Ferry won’t sell vehicle tickets for rental cars, and car spaces are effectively for Vieques and Culebra residents. Rent a car on Vieques, and book it before your crossing.

Does the ferry to Vieques leave from Fajardo?

No. Since 2018, all public Vieques and Culebra ferries depart from the Ceiba terminal at the former Roosevelt Roads base. Fajardo marinas now mainly offer private catamaran tours to Vieques beaches.

How much is a flight to Vieques?

One way, expect about $55 from Ceiba (Vieques Air Link, per Google Flights), from about $109 from Isla Grande, and roughly $79–$199 from SJU (Cape Air, fall 2026). Prices rise around holidays.

Can you do Vieques as a day trip?

Yes. Take an early ferry or Ceiba flight, beach-hop by público or rental Jeep, and return in the afternoon or evening. Expect 3–4 hours of round-trip transit from San Juan. Catamaran tours from Fajardo (about $145–$180) are an easy alternative.

Can I see Mosquito Bay on a day trip from San Juan?

Only if you book the first tour of the evening (about 6:30–7:00 PM) and make the last ferry, usually 9:30 PM. A packaged tour from about $230 handles the timing for you. Staying overnight is far less stressful.

Do I need a car on Vieques?

Not strictly. Públicos run between the ferry and Esperanza for about $5 per person, and bio bay tours shuttle you from Esperanza. To explore refuge beaches, rent a Jeep (from about $55–$95 per day) and book early.

Is the Vieques ferry reliable?

Usually, but weather, mechanical problems and protests cause cancellations. In 2026, storms stranded passengers in February and a protest cancelled sailings on April 1. Keep the Ceiba flight as a backup and leave a buffer day.

Is there a ferry between Vieques and Culebra?

Not regularly. Discover Puerto Rico says there’s no direct public ferry; go back through Ceiba, or take a short flight or charter between the islands.

How much is parking at the Ceiba ferry terminal?

Reports range from $8 to $15 per day for the large lot near the terminal, which has a shuttle to the gate. The operator publishes no official rate, so budget $15. Don’t park on the road; tickets are issued.
