About This Experience

This is the Laguna Grande paddle run by the operator that has been doing it the longest, and it starts where the road runs out. You meet at the kiosk at the end of Road 987 in Las Croabas, a small fishing village on Fajardo's northeast corner, about an hour from San Juan if you drive yourself. Check-in is at sunset. You are fitted with a double kayak, a backrest, a paddle and a life jacket, handed botanical insect repellent, and walked through the Kayak 101 safety briefing before anyone gets on the water.

The paddle out crosses a small fisherman's harbour and enters the channel into Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve — a mangrove tunnel roughly 25 to 30 minutes long, with the canopy closing overhead and night birds audible on both sides. The channel opens into Laguna Grande itself, under the old Fajardo lighthouse, and that is where the guides raft the group up and let you put your hands in the water.

Two things make this listing worth its $85 rather than the cheaper Fajardo options. The group is capped at 24 and the guides are CPR and first-aid certified. And the operator tells you in advance when conditions look poor — several reviewers who saw little or no glow still rated the trip five stars specifically because they had been warned by email beforehand and went anyway for the mangroves and the sky.

• Bioluminescence is a living organism, not a light switch. Brightness varies with moon phase, rainfall and sargassum, and no operator can guarantee it on a given night.
