La Parguera: Bioluminescent Bay Water Bike Tour

4.8 (105 verified reviews)

About This Experience

A pedal catamaran instead of a kayak, which turns out to matter more than it sounds. Chiliboats water bikes sit higher and wider than a kayak, you pedal rather than paddle, and your hands stay free — so you can trail them in the glowing water while still moving, which is awkward in a kayak where both hands are on a paddle.

The route runs about 25 minutes of pedalling from Playita Punta Papayo out to the La Parguera bio bay, through a protected coastal stretch of mangroves and calm water. You spend time in the glow and, on clear nights, under a full sky of stars before pedalling back. Onshore preparation takes about 30 minutes and the water portion runs 75 to 90 minutes.

At 4.8 from 105 reviews it is the best-rated of the three La Parguera tours we cover, and the stability is the reason people pick it — the operator markets it specifically at beginners and first-timers. The trade-offs are real though: this is a double-boat-only tour, there is no swimming, and there is a genuine fitness requirement stated in the listing, which asks that you be able to walk for 60 minutes without stopping.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.8/5 by 105 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

This was magical. For others reference: we went on a 40% moon and somewhat windy clear skies night. Despite those conditions we saw very cool bioluminescence. Of course that’s the main event but even the peaceful bike out to the cove was amazing. Guides were also fantastic.

What a great activity! Mary and Waldo were great. Very happy that we went w the water bike over other options. Would definitely do again with the same company!

Very nice activity - lots of helpful information given, and not too physically challenging.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a water bike and why choose one over a kayak?

A Chiliboats water bike is a pedal-driven catamaran — two hulls, a seat and pedals. It is considerably more stable than a kayak and it leaves your hands free, which is the real advantage in a bio bay: you can run your fingers through the glowing water while the boat is still moving. Kayakers have to stop paddling to do the same thing.

Can I swim on this tour?

No. Swimming is not permitted on this particular tour, even though La Parguera is the one Puerto Rican bio bay where swimming is allowed in general. If getting into the water is the point for you, take one of the La Parguera boat trips instead.

How fit do I need to be?

The operator states you should be able to walk for 60 minutes without stopping. The pedalling itself is about 25 minutes each way at a controlled pace set by the route leader, so it is steady rather than strenuous — but it is a genuine requirement, and the listing also excludes guests over 70 and anyone with a low fitness level.

Is there a height or weight limit?

Yes. Minimum height is 4 ft 6 in (140 cm), which rules out most younger children, and the maximum weight is 243 lb (110 kg). The pedal mechanism needs your legs to reach it, which is where the height rule comes from.

How long is the whole thing?

Between 90 and 120 minutes. That breaks down as roughly 30 minutes of onshore preparation and briefing, then 75 to 90 minutes on the water including the pedal out and back. Arrive half an hour before your slot to be sure of a parking space.
