San Juan: El Yunque and Bio Bay Full-Day Tour with Transport

About This Experience

One long day that pairs the two things most first-time visitors to Puerto Rico want to do, and solves the transport for both. You are collected in San Juan in the morning, driven along the north coast with a stop in Luquillo for fresh local fruit, and spend the middle of the day in El Yunque — the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System — hiking to a natural pool with a waterfall and a rock slide you can use.

After the forest the day turns towards Fajardo, and the finale is a guided kayak through the red mangrove channel into Laguna Grande after dark. It is the same bio bay paddle sold on its own elsewhere on this site, here bolted onto the end of a full day out. The rainforest entry fee, all equipment, fruit and snacks, and photographs from the trip are included, and the guides are certified in lifeguarding, CPR and first aid.

Twelve hours is the real commitment. The operator rates the difficulty as moderate to strenuous, the minimum age is 8, and the exclusion list is long — this is not a gentle sightseeing day. At $184 it is the most expensive tour we list, but set against booking El Yunque and a bio bay tour separately with transport from San Juan for each, it is not the outlier it first looks.
