Where to Stay

Where to Stay for Puerto Rico's Bio Bays

Sleep near the bay you are going to paddle.

  • On Foot Las Croabas to the Kayaks
  • 55–60 Min San Juan to Las Croabas
  • 3 Nov 2026 Prices & Fees Checked

Stay in Las Croabas, the fishing village on the edge of Fajardo where the Laguna Grande kayak tours launch. It is about an hour’s drive from San Juan’s airport, and after a night paddle you can walk or drive a few minutes back to bed. If you want the brightest of the three bays, sleep in Esperanza on Vieques instead: the Mosquito Bay tours meet there, and you need at least one night on the island to do one. For the splurge, El Conquistador sits on the hill above Las Croabas. San Juan works for a late arrival or a tour with pickup, and La Parguera only makes sense if you are already on the south-west coast.

In Las Croabas, Puerto Rico Bio Bay Tours, Kayaking Puerto Rico and Pure Adventure launch onto Laguna Grande. In Esperanza, Adventure Vieques, Tropical Reef Watersport and Borikua Tours’ electric catamaran start their Mosquito Bay trips. In La Parguera, Mareaito Charters, Joy Tours and Caribbean Chiliboats leave from the village waterfront.

Las Croabas, Fajardo: walk to the kayaks

This is the base for most people, because none of the Fajardo kayak tours collect from hotels and the tours end after dark. The kiosk for Puerto Rico Bio Bay Tours sits at the very end of Road 987, across from the Ocean View Restaurant, and the village around it has seafood places and a handful of guesthouses and apartments. The trade-off is that Las Croabas is quiet and small: there are no big beach hotels in the village itself, and you will want a car for anything beyond Seven Seas Beach.

Sueños del Mar (mid-range) rents two-bedroom apartments on Road 987 that its listing places “within walking distance to the Biobay tours”, with sea views, a kitchen and free parking; the minimum check-in age is 21. Anchors Hotel (mid-range) is a five-minute drive back along the Cabezas road, with an outdoor pool and free parking, 1.9 miles from Seven Seas Beach; check-in from 18. El Conquistador Resort (luxury) is the big beachfront resort on the hill above, seven minutes’ drive (1.8 miles) from the kiosk, with pools, a pool bar, a private beach and no minimum check-in age, which makes it the family choice. See all stays around Las Croabas.

The next morning: the Vieques ferry

Las Croabas is 32 to 39 minutes from the Ceiba ferry terminal, the only public ferry to Vieques. A night here after a Laguna Grande paddle sets you up for an island crossing the next day without the drive from San Juan.

Esperanza, Vieques: sleep beside Mosquito Bay

Esperanza is the small south-coast village on Vieques where the Mosquito Bay tours meet, and it is the right base if brightness is the point of your trip. The tours run after dark and the evening ferries back to the main island are few, so one operator will not take a booking without a night’s accommodation on Vieques, and another recommends arriving a full day ahead. The trade-off is getting there: an hour on the ferry from Ceiba or a short flight, and small hotels that fill early in winter.

El Blok (upper) is an adults-only hotel with a restaurant on the Esperanza strip; the Adventure Vieques transparent-canoe tour meets at a trailer beside it, and parking is free. Esperanza Inn Guesthouse (mid-range) has an outdoor pool and free parking, a two-minute walk from Esperanza by its listing; check-in from 18. Old Crow Hotel and Suites (mid-range) has a pool and sea views on Road 201, an eight-minute drive (3.3 miles) from Esperanza, with no minimum check-in age. See all stays in Esperanza.

La Parguera, Lajas: boats from the village

La Parguera is the south-west village where the boats and water bikes leave for the bay, and it is the one bay of the three where you can get into the water. Stay here if you are already touring the south-west coast; from Fajardo it is about three hours’ drive. Most bay trips leave from the village waterfront, so a room in the village means no driving at night.

Parguera Plaza Hotel (upper) is adults only, with a pool, pool bar and restaurant on PR-304, a five-minute walk from the docks; parking is $10 a night and must be reserved. Nautilus by La Jamaca (mid-range) is in the village by the docks, with a pool and free but limited parking; minimum check-in age 21. Copamarina Beach Resort & Spa (luxury) is a beachfront resort with two pools and a spa in Guánica, 33 minutes’ drive (16 miles) from the docks. See all stays in La Parguera.

San Juan: the airport base and the pickup tours

San Juan is a real base when you land late, fly out early, or book a bio bay tour with transport. Isla Verde sits beside Luis Muñoz Marín airport, and Condado is a few minutes further west; both are 55 to 60 minutes’ free-flow drive from the Las Croabas launch, longer in evening traffic. The bio bay tours with San Juan transport collect from hotels in areas such as Condado, Isla Verde and Old San Juan, and some use one or two fixed pickup hotels, so check the zone on your tour before you book the room. The San Juan tours guide lists them.

Hyatt Centric San Juan Isla Verde (upper) is steps from Isla Verde Beach and 1.2 miles from the airport by its listing; minimum check-in age 21. San Juan Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino (upper) is on Condado Beach with an oceanfront pool and a casino. See all stays in Isla Verde or in Condado.

If your flight lands in the afternoon, you can still drive straight to Las Croabas for a late tour, since the airport is about 57 minutes from the kiosk. On a late-night arrival, sleep in Isla Verde and move east the next day.

Should you split the stay?

Split it when you want two bays. Las Croabas and Esperanza pair well: paddle Laguna Grande on the first night, take the Ceiba ferry the next day and do Mosquito Bay that night, then come back. Put Vieques first and finish in Las Croabas or Isla Verde, the end nearest the airport, so a cancelled ferry does not cost you your flight home. Adding La Parguera only pays off on a week-long trip, because moving from Fajardo to the south-west costs most of a day on the road. On a two- or three-night trip, stay put in Las Croabas and do one bay well.

Booking tips

Book the tour first, then the room. The Laguna Grande tour cancels free up to 24 hours before, so you can hold a date near the new moon and build the stay around it; the best-time guide explains why moonlight matters. In winter the Vieques guesthouses and ferries fill first, so lock those in before anything else.

You need a car in Las Croabas, La Parguera and on Vieques, because the bay tours there do not collect from hotels. The Fajardo kiosk sits at the very end of Road 987, and the La Parguera boats meet at named houses and docks with no street number, so read your voucher’s meeting point before you drive. On Vieques, públicos run between the ferry and Esperanza, but they are scarce after dark.

Read on Booking.com on 3 November 2026 for a 1–2 March 2027 stay, two adults. Booking.com folds the resort fee and taxes into the price it shows, but parking is charged on top. We did not check the two Booking.com searches for Parador Villa Parguera and Parguera Beach Club, which have no listing of their own there.

Our arithmetic for a Laguna Grande night: at El Conquistador, $517 for the room (the $65 resort fee is already inside) plus $15 parking comes to $532. At Sueños del Mar the same night is $192 with free parking. Add the tour at $85 a person and two people spend $362 on the Sueños night and $702 on the resort night.

For more, compare all three bays on the homepage table, read the Laguna Grande, Mosquito Bay and La Parguera tour pages, our review of the Laguna Grande kayak tour, and how to get to Vieques. When your room is sorted, check Laguna Grande dates and book.
